I really love potatoes and this recipe for garlic smashed potatoes is especially perfect for the summer. It is such a great side dish to go along with grilled chicken, which I’ve been grilling up a storm now that the weather in Toronto has warmed up.

This recipe for Garlic Smashed Potatoes comes from the lovely Jen of Jen’s Journey, which was my assigned blog for this month’s Secret Recipe Club. Jen’s site is full of fun giveaways as well as many recipes, I was originally planning on making her Jalapeno Cilantro Hummus but these potatoes were calling my name – what can I say, I’m a sucker for any starch or carb. The only major change I made to the recipe was cutting down on the amount of butter because I found that it was just as delicious with a little less fat and a tiny bit healthier as well, which is always a good thing to me.

So what are smashed potatoes? Well, from the photo, you can tell that they are literally smashed. This kind of preparation for potatoes is a two step process, first the new potatoes are boiled for about 12 to 15 minutes or until they are tender. When they are tender, they are then smashed using a potato masher and brushed with butter and garlic (the best part, yum) and then baked in a hot, 400F oven until crisp and fully cooked. It may seem like they are a bit of a hassle to make, but trust me, once you have your first bite you’ll wonder why you’ve ever cooked potatoes differently.

After reading many posts on Jen’s site, I feel like I’ve really grown to know her, she is so honest and open which is something that I really appreciate when reading a blog.

This recipe makes enough for about 4 people, but can easily be doubled.

  • 1 lb of new potatoes
  • olive oil for the pan
  • salt & pepper to taste
  • 1/2 tsp paprika
  • 2 tbsp melted butter
  • 2 cloves garlic, crushed


  1. Pre-heat oven to 400.
  2. Bring a large pot of water to a boil and cook potatoes for 12-15 minutes or until tender. Draine and rinse.
  3. Lightly grease a baking sheet with olive oil and sprinkle the sheet with salt. In a small bowl, combine melted butter with garlic.
  4. Place the potatoes 2 inches apart on prepared baking sheet and use a potato masher to smash the potatoes. Sprinkle them with salt, pepper and paprika. Brush evenly with butter and garlic mixture.
  5. Bake in the oven for 25-30 minutes or until potatoes are crispy.

I find that these Garlic Smashed Potatoes go really well with summer, like the way country music goes so well with summer.
